what no instructor can do

horse thumb what no instructor can doWe can give you tools, techniques, ideas, and even the rare enlightenment moments here and there.

But the one thing that no instructor can do, –that is arguably the most important- is teach you to feel the music. No one can create an emotional connection between you and the song you are listening to.

I’ve seen dancers go on for years, listening to music that for them personally, served as little more than a method of organizing their steps and movements.

On the other hand, i’ve seen beginners come to class on day 1, and be completely moved by the sounds hitting their ears.

I’d say most fall into the middle, gradually developing a connection over time, as they learn the movements and history that developed alongside the arrangements.

My advice?

Develop an appreciation by understanding the roots of whatever music you are dancing to. Foster a respect.

Want to learn Swing?

Start off, by researching the Charleston, go a bit deeper into the Juba..which at some point will inevitably lead you to African dance and the Habanera.

Salsa?

Read up on Clave, Rumba, Danzon, and Son.  Take an hour or so to develop more of an understanding and big picture of the living history behind the music you dance to.

This will go a long way in developing a deep appreciation, which in turn, can develop into an understanding and ultimately, connection.

Or you can simply learn steps and regurgitate them. But as usual, the only person you fool is yourself.
